Backstory

My current employer, Dscout, had installed the Donut app into their Slack years ago to help their remote workers get to know one another. However, they'd long outgrown the free plan, and while Donut has grown an impressive array of features, we didn't really need them all, and so paying the several hundred dollars a month subscription wasn't worth it. But that meant most of the 130+ employees didn't get to participate in the regular coffee chat match-ups.

Since I was already hacking on Discord and Slack bots on the side, around Oct 2025, I decided to throw some energy towards matching folks up. It's been going well, and I'm close to inviting other folks to install Tavern into their Slack workspaces.

SuperDB

Another technical interest I've been investing my time in the past couple years is SuperDB. SuperDB used to be called zq, and I wrote a series of articles about LearningZq to help folks making the transition over from jq. The Brim team has made a ton of progress since I wrote those in the summer of 2024 and are nearing their first release as they have a large chunk of PostgreSQL SQL support in the tool.

From basic text manipulation, to better-than-jq data piping side-by-side with proper SQL for JSON and other data formats, the super binary is a powerful swiss-army knife.

With SuperDB for my data layer and some simple Cloud scripting inside AWS, getting Tavern to a 1.0 version has been a breeze.
