PlansAndPlanning

June 11, 2004
Glenn has blurbed about plans in his blog, which reminded me I still hadn't blogged the following.

While the always reliable internet is spewing forth a few different versions of this quote, I'm going with this one cuz I like this wording the most:

“In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable” - Dwight D. Eisenhower

If anyone has a more definitive source, I'd appreciate it.

Great quote from Steven Spielberg I picked up tonight:
[N]one of us know anything. Everybody thinks we have a crystal ball. There's no such thing, you just have to always fly by the seat of your pants and do the best work you can do. Everything is a mystery.

See //TheArts/TheMoralOfEW for a little more backstory.

Update 6/11/04

Clarke Ching has a nice re-blog about the futility of project plans:
In my experience, when we use the Gantt charts, they are usually used as ... an attempt to describe the project ... as it might happen if all went according to plan. Invariably, it doesn't turn out that way, however.
